Alberta commits $16 million to affordable housing upgrades

EDMONTON – The Alberta government is putting $16 million towards capital maintenance and renewal funding for 400 affordable housing units.

One-hundred units will reopen and another 300 will continue to be available for use while undergoing preventative maintenance, a government release stated. 

Funding will be provided to 30 housing providers across Alberta that operate government-owned affordable housing units and through the National Housing Strategy bilateral agreement, these providers can apply to the federal government for cost-matching. 

funding will be made available for units in need of repair and maintenance projects, including replacing windows, repairing roofs and improving interior environments, to help bring units up to date and ensure they can still be used for years to come, the release said.

Approximately $5.5 million will go to Edmonton with $4 million to Calgary and other communities receiving $6.5 million.
