Federal and B.C. governments invest in social housing ventilation retrofits

VICTORIA — The federal and British Columbia governments are putting more than $4.8 million into ventilation improvements for nine public social housing buildings and one service building in the province.

The federal government is investing $3,895,429 through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and B.C. is contributing $973,857. 

Maple Ridge Manor in Victoria, one of the projects being funded, provides housing for survivors of brain injury and the funding will help support the maintenance of the facility by replacing energy-recovery ventilation, heat pumps, a make-up air unit and exhaust fans in the kitchen, a federal government release stated.

The Beacon Hotel, Hotel Canada, Molson’s Bank Building and Orange Hall in Vancouver will also have their ventilation systems upgraded. Projects in Merrit, Burnaby and Chase will replace furnaces, air conditioning units and condensing units, the release said.

The housing projects are below:

  • City of Burnaby – Douglas Drummond Manor: Replace make up air unit, related electrical upgrades, and other related works. Federal: $961,061; B.C.: $240,265
  • City of Merritt – Trace Winds Terrace: Replace make-up, condensing units and heating and ventilation components. Federal: $616,320; B.C.: $154,080
  • City of Vancouver – Hotel Canada: Replace corridor and amenity cooling and other related works. Federal: $299,600; B.C.: $74,900
  • City of Vancouver – Orange Hall: Replace make-up air handling unit and other related works. Federal: $256,800; B.C.: $64,200
  • City of Vancouver – Irving Hotel (previously known as Sunrise Hotel): Replace corridor cooling, make-up air unit heat pump, electrical connection upgrade, amenity room cooling, and install a mini-split heat pump and other related works. Federal: $342,400; B.C.: $85,600
  • City of Vancouver – Beacon Hotel: Upgrade central cooling, electrical connection and other related works. Federal: $256,800; B.C.: $64,200
  • City of Vancouver – Molson’s Bank Building (Roosevelt Hotel): Replace make-up air, condensing units and heating and ventilation components. Federal: $256,800; B.C.: $64,200
  • City of Victoria – Mary Cridge Manor: Replace energy recovery ventilation, heat pumps, make-up air unit, kitchen exhaust fans and other related works. Federal: $470,800; B.C.: $117,700
  • Regional District of Greater Vancouver – Maple Hotel (Previously known as Washington Hotel): Upgrade central cooling, electrical connection and other related works. Federal: $256,800; B.C.: $64,200
  • Village of Chase Shuswap – Ilahee Lodge: Replace a furnace, 15 window air conditioners and other related works. Federal: $178,048; B.C. gov’t: $44,512
