B.C. government suspends trucking company after Massey Tunnel roof incident
WIKIMEDIA COMMONS - The entrance of the Massey Tunnel linking Delta and Richmond in the Greater Vancouver region.

VANCOUVER – The Government of British Columbia’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has grounded all 20 vehicles in a local company’s fleet after an incident involving the Massey Tunnel.

On Jan. 10 one of TSD Holdings’ vehicles scraped the roof of the Massey Tunnel while travelling through the structure.

“Our investigation determined the company responsible is TSD Holdings Ltd., and the company was served an immediate suspension. We have grounded all 20 vehicles in their fleet, and they will stay grounded until the investigation is complete,” a government statement said.

“This sends a strong message to drivers and carriers that there is no excuse for these crashes, and we are taking every incident seriously. It has never been easier to follow a route to guide the load to travel safely through our highway system and avoid the potential for impact with infrastructure.”

The statement said immediate fleet suspensions while an investigation is underway are part of a suite of new enforcement tools to mitigate this type of incidents involving commercial vehicles.

The tunnel incident follows a spate of unrelated incidents where trucks scraped or crashed into overpasses on highways.
