Portage Avenue apartment in Winnipeg vacated due to unsafe conditions

Portage Avenue apartment in Winnipeg vacated due to unsafe conditions

WINNIPEG – The City of Winnipeg has issued an order to the owner of 2440 Portage Ave. to immediately vacate the building because of its unsafe condition.

“We were recently notified of a third-party engineering inspection of the building that uncovered severe deterioration of its structure in various locations, necessitating the vacate order,” the city wrote in a release.

The requirements issued to the property owner include:

  • Immediately vacating and ceasing any occupancy of the property;
  • prohibiting entry to the property until it is determined by the city it is safe to enter; and
  • ensuring continuous 24/7 monitoring of the property as well as immediately advising the city of any change in the structural stability of the building.

City officials were going door-to-door to advise tenants of the order and to ensure the building is completely vacated.

The city is also establishing a reception centre to help residents who do not have other options to find temporary accommodations and connect them with available resources and supports, the release explains.

The timeline for repairs, inspections and re-occupancy have not been determined. However, it’s anticipated it may take several months to address the identified structural issues.

City officials will also be going door-to-door advising residents in neighbouring properties along Assiniboine Crescent that they are on an evacuation watch, and to prepare to evacuate if and when the structural condition of the apartment building necessitates it.

It’s expected that further orders will be issued to the Portage Avenue property owner with respect to the specific actions necessary to address the unsafe conditions.
