Winnipeg launches Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program for local housing

WINNIPEG – The City of Winnipeg has launched the Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program with $25 million in the first phase of funding for local housing projects.

Developers can now submit grant applications for funding support of eligible housing projects, a release said.

“Last December, the federal government announced that we were providing $122 million to the City of Winnipeg through the Housing Accelerator Fund, to get more homes built that our city urgently needs,” federal Minister of Northern Affairs and Minister Responsible for PrairiesCan Dan Vandal said in a statement.

“Today, we see how that funding is helping remove barriers to housing supply, accelerating the growth of supply, and helping to build affordable and sustainable communities. The launch of this new grant program is just one initiative among many, that will help build new affordable housing projects across Winnipeg.”

The first phase of the program will focus on projects creating new housing in the categories of downtown non-profit and affordable housing, downtown market projects and affordable housing located outside of downtown.

“We’re looking for developers and non-profit housing agencies to bring forward their most innovative and creative proposals. Our goal is to maximize the number of units built, making a meaningful impact on our downtown residential population and ensuring more Winnipeggers have access to safe, affordable homes,” Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham said.

Grant applications will be accepted until July 12 and applicants will need to demonstrate the ability to secure a building permit within one year of approval, the release said.

The Capital Grant Program is being funded by the Housing Accelerator Fund, a National Housing Strategy program launched in 2023 by the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the release said.
