Metro Vancouver elects Mike Hurley as new chair

VANCOUVER – Metro Vancouver’s board of directors has elected Burnaby, B.C. Mayor Mike Hurley as its new chair.

John McEwen, mayor of the Village of Anmore, will remain in the position of vice-chair, a release said.

Metro Vancouver is governed by a 41-person board of directors comprised of elected officials from each member jurisdiction. The board oversees four legal entities: the Metro Vancouver Regional District, Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District, Greater Vancouver Water District, and Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation.

Duties of the board chair, the release said, include:

  • Providing leadership to the organization
  • Acting as the organization’s chief spokesperson
  • Presiding at board meetings
  • Providing leadership on regional district business and affairs
  • Establishing standing committees and appointing people to those committees
  • Ensuring the good governance of Metro Vancouver.

Metro Vancouver provides services to 21 municipalities, one electoral area and one treaty First Nation, serving more than 2.8 million residents, the release said, adding services include providing drinking water, wastewater treatment, solid waste management and air quality regulation, as well as planning for urban growth, managing a regional parks system, and building and operating affordable rental housing.
