VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Park Board decided earlier this week to repair the heavily damaged Jericho Pier at a cost of $1.072 million.
The pier has been closed since January 2022 when it was heavily damaged by a storm surge. It had also been damaged by a previous storm in November 2021.
The structure was originally built in 1977 through a refurbishment of existing piles and the structure was constructed in 1977 through a refurbishment of the existing piles and structure. The pier is composed of wood on creosote-infused piles which connects to the shore through a rubble mound embankment.
in September 2023, the park board directed staff to proceed with a like-for-like repair of Jericho Pier to reopen the facility to the public, a report stated. In December 2023, a request for proposal for consulting services for the rehabilitation of Jericho Pier was awarded to McElhanney Inc. and the firm is acting as a consultant for the project.
The scope of the work involves timber, riprap, a safety ladder and gangway and float repairs.
An invitation to tender was released in July for rehabilitation of the pier with three companies responding. The companies were Blue Water Systems Ltd., who gave a price of $1,071,837.21; Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd. for $1,220,641; and Fraser River Pile and Dredge (GP) Inc. for $1,738,000.
Staff recommended the board negotiate and enter an eight-month contract, with an option to extend the contract at its discretion, with Blue Water Systems Ltd. for the rehabilitation (like-for-like repair) of Jericho Pier, which the board voted in favour of.
