EDMONTON — The Alberta government is slated to release its budget at the start of the new spring legislative session, which will begin on Feb. 27.
According to a release, last year’s budget focused on strengthening health care and education, building safe communities and managing resources wisely. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Alberta’s population grew at an unprecedented rate, which has put intense strain on many of the province’s public services.
Budget 2025 aims to address this strain while helping plan for the future.
“Given the significant uncertainty in global geopolitics and energy markets, Alberta’s government will need to make prudent choices to meet its responsibilities,” a release states. “Additionally, the eventual costs of contract negotiations with thousands of public sector workers need to be balanced with Alberta’s record-breaking population growth.”
The government did state fast-tracking school construction, fair and competitive taxes and supporting health care, education and other public services, remain at the forefront.
“Alberta is facing headwinds from every direction right now: cross-border trade issues, volatile oil prices and pressure on our public services as more people move here to make Alberta their home. I am working with my colleagues to build a budget that builds Alberta and meets the challenge head on,” added Nate Horner, minister of finance, in a statement.
Development of the budget will continue throughout February.
