Construction on the Disraeli Bridges project reached a milestone this week in Winnipeg, with the city announcing partial closures of Disraeli and Gladstone Streets. Plenary Roads Winnipeg, the consortium selected to design, build, finance and maintain the project, plans to replace the Disraeli Freeway bridge, which crosses the Red River and the Canadian Pacific Railway, with new structures.
At the peak of construction, the Disraeli Bridges Project will support 120 construction jobs, according to the city.
Initially, Plenary Roads Winnipeg plans to build a vehicle bridge east of the existing structure. Then it will demolish the current bridge, which is 50 years old, and build a second bridge for pedestrians and bicycles west of the current structure.
The proposed new vehicle bridge will have four lanes, with a concrete barrier in the middle and another concrete barrier separating traffic from a pedestrian sidewalk.
The structures have also been designed to allow for future expansion of the Disraeli Freeway to six lanes through the widening of the spans within the right-of-way.
The Plenary Roads Winnipeg team includes Plenary Group, PCL Constructors Canada Inc., Wardrop Engineering, Stantec and Borland Construction.
