BC Place is leaking.
Duncan Blomfield, a spokesman for PavCo, the crown corporation that manages BC Place, said contractors were conducting work on sections of the fabric roof, replacing portions and then making seals when the rains came. The replacements were being done by contractors for a previous issue.
Lubricant from overhead cables had leaked onto the fabric.
Duncan said it is the contractor’s job to right the "construction deficiency."
He added that the leaks were not due to any damage to the roof.
The roof is a cable-supported retractable roof and about 76,000 square metres of fabric covers it.
The fixed roof fabric, known as PTFE is a Teflon-coated fibreglass fabric.
The fabric is welded together using high frequency technology.
Duncan added that there is no cost to PavCo related to the repairs.
This isn’t the first time the roof has leaked. Shortly after the $514 million renovation to the stadium roof was completed in 2011 and the day before the stadium was set to host the 99th Grey Cup, water dripped onto the field.
A faulty silicone seal was determined to have caused that leak. Duncan said he expects the fabric replacements to be complete by November.
