$71-million Red Deer wastewater project wraps up

RED DEER, ALTA. — Construction has officially wrapped up on the new $71-million North Red Deer Regional Wastewater System, which was completed ahead of schedule and is now in operation.

The project broke ground in the spring of last year and included the construction of a 28-kilometre pipeline system connecting the communities of Lacombe, Blackfalds and Lacombe County to the Red Deer wastewater treatment facility.

The system also includes two lift stations in Blackfalds and Lacombe, emergency storage reservoirs and an odour management facility in the city of Red Deer.

The federal government provided $29.8 million under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund for the project, with the Government of Alberta providing approximately $33.2 million.

The remaining costs were covered by the North Red Deer Regional Wastewater Commission with a small contribution from the City of Red Deer for future wastewater flows.

“Reliable access to clean drinking water and wastewater treatment systems is essential for all Albertans,” said Alberta Minister of Transportation Brian Mason in a statement.

“This project is a great example of how by collaborating with our federal and municipal partners, we are able to fund more projects and provide better services for Albertans.”

Earlier this year, federal-provincial funding of over $16.3 million was announced for four other water and wastewater projects across the province.

The projects include upgrades to wastewater treatment plants in the towns of Vermilion, Barrhead and St. Paul and a new water reservoir in the Hamlet of Beaver Mines.
