Contractors named for Coastal GasLink pipeline project

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — Surerus Murphy Joint Venture (SMJV) has been announced as one of four contractors on TransCanada Pipeline’s (TCPL) Coastal GasLink pipeline project.

SMJV is a partnership of Fort St. John, B.C.-based Surerus Pipeline Inc. and London, U.K.-based J. Murphy & Sons Ltd. The Coastal Gaslink project will deliver natural gas from Dawson Creek, BC. to a proposed LNG Canada facility near Kitimat, B.C.

“We are excited to be part of this very important project and look forward to working with TCPL and local communities to bring high quality B.C. gas to crucial international markets. This pipeline will bring major economic benefits to British Columbians not only through market access but also by creating many good jobs for people throughout the region as well as our First Nation’s partners,” Surerus Pipeline Inc. president Sean Surerus said in a statement.

TransCanada also awarded contracts to SA Energy Group, Macro Spiecapag Joint Venture and Pacific Atlantic Pipeline Construction Inc. All four contractors will receive the contracted work pending a positive final investment decision by the joint venture participants of LNG Canada for the Kitimat facility. The estimated cumulative value of the work is approximately $2.8 billion.

The contractors were chosen, according to a TransCanada media release, based on “core principles of safety, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement along with their financial strength, technical design expertise, and contract competitiveness.”

“The selection of our construction team is an important milestone for the Coastal GasLink project. The project will create significant employment opportunities for Indigenous communities in northern B.C. as well as local skilled labourers and businesses,” said Costal Gaslink president Rick Gateman.

“Our pipeline, connecting prolific Northeast B.C. gas to high value, international end-use markets via the LNG Canada liquefaction facility in Kitimat, will allow British Columbians and Canadians alike the opportunity to more effectively benefit from the responsible development of our valuable natural gas resources.”

The contractors will be responsible for hiring 2,500 workers over a four-year period.
