PAUL FIRST NATION, ALTA. — Located 60 kilometres west of Edmonton, with a school enrollment of approximately 470 students, the community of Paul First Nation will soon have a new kindergarten to Grade 9 school.
As announced, Indigenous Services Canada is providing $18.6 million for construction of the facility and an additional $800,000 for a Head Start program space at the school.
The new facility will include an industrial art shop for career and technology programs for junior high students and a skills and education centre for members of the community.
The project broke ground in May and is expected to be completed by fall next year.
“This school will provide invaluable opportunities for the children of Paul First Nation to reach their full potential,” said Minister of Indigenous Services Jane Philpott in a statement.
In Budget 2016, as part of a long-term strategy to improve education infrastructure in First Nation communities, the Government of Canada committed $969.4 million for construction, repair and maintenance of school facilities across the country.
Budget 2016 also included a $2.6-billion commitment over five years for primary and secondary education programs for First Nation communities which includes funding for language and cultural programming, literacy and numeracy programs and special needs education.
