PROVINCE OF BC — The Government of British Columbia has announced the RW Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous, B.C. will be replaced with a five lane, $224.5-million structure with approaches widened to four lanes. Design work will take two years and construction is estimated to begin in 2020.

SICAMOUS, B.C. — The Government of British Columbia recently announced a new $224.5-million five-lane structure will replace the existing RW Bruhn Bridge in Sicamous, B.C. with approaches widened to four lanes.

The project will feature intersection improvements between Old Sicamous Road and Silver Sands Road and will feature acceleration and deceleration lanes at Old Spallumcheen Road along with a roadway passing under the bridge.

After consultation, analysis and field work the five-lane one-bridge design was chosen over building two bridges consisting of a four-lane structure at the existing site and a new Main Street bridge. Archeological field work indicated the five-lane option minimized impacts to the area.

Design work will take two years, the government release said, and early construction activity is anticipated to begin in 2020. The project is cost-shared with the federal government, who will commit up to $91 million through the New Building Canada Fund — Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component with the province contributing the remainder of funding.

The RW Bruhn Bridge Replacement Project is part of the B.C. Transportation and Infrastructure Ministry’s Highway 1 Kamloops to Alberta Border Four-Laning Program, which the province has contributed $464 million to over the next three years, according to the 2018 B.C. budget.
