Stewardson Way overpass construction to start in new year
GOVERNMENT OF B.C. FLICKR — A new multi-use overpass across Stewardson Way will be located east of the Queensborough Bridge where there is no pedestrian crosswalk. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross 6th Avenue and Stewardson Way. The overpass will also provide easier access to Grimston Park, the 22nd Street transit exchange and the Millennium/Expo SkyTrain station.

VANCOUVER — Construction will get underway in January on a $5.1-million pedestrian and cyclist overpass project at Stewardson Way, east of the Queensborough Bridge, where there is currently no pedestrian crosswalk.

Claire Trevena, B.C.’s minister of transportation and infrastructure, said in a media release that pedestrians and cyclists have been frustrated with the absence of a safe crossing on this stretch of Stewardson Way.

“This project puts the safety of people first by separating pedestrians and cyclists from a busy street,” she said.

Kingston Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract, which is being funded through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, with the Government of Canada contributing 50 per cent for eligible costs, the province providing 33 per cent and TransLink 17 per cent.

The projects is expected to be completed by the end of summer. When finished, the overpass will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross at 6th Avenue and Stewardson Way. The overpass will also provide easier access to Grimston Park, the 22nd Street transit exchange and the Millennium/Expo SkyTrain station, stated the release.
