Vancouver Port expansion contract awarded to Dragados joint venture
PORT OF VANCOUVER — A map shows the scope of work for the Centerm Expansion Project. The project will increase the terminal’s expansion by 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units and address traffic issues.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in B.C. has awarded a contract for a container terminal expansion to Centennial Expansion Partners (CXP).

CXP is a joint venture between Dragados Canada, Jacob Brothers Construction and Fraser River Pile & Dredge Inc.

The expansion of the Centerm terminal – expected to be substantially complete near the end of 2021 – will expand the terminal’s design capacity to 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year, an increase of two thirds its current capacity.

The work also includes the remodelling of the accesses to the terminal. The terminal is operated by DP World, one of the largest container terminal operators in the world with 78 terminals in 40 countries.

Crews will build a new Centennial Road Overpass and an extension to Waterfront Road. The aim is to improve the movement of goods and access along the entire south shore port area. This will also address road congestion and increase efficiency by removing port-related traffic from surrounding roads and bypassing three at-grade rail crossings for port users, while providing a continuous port road to Highway 1.

The project is expected to generate 350 full-time equivalent jobs over the construction period, and potentially 40 additional staff as well as an additional 290 full-time longshoremen and warehouse jobs during operation.
