REGINA — The City of Regina is introducing new traffic calming curbs to enhance pedestrian safety.
Traffic calming (TC) curbs are premanufactured concrete slabs placed on the asphalt roadway to replace traditional speed bumps where pedestrian safety is a concern.
“TC curbs serve as a catalyst to increase safety in neighbourhoods with a pedestrian focus by encouraging drivers to travel at reduced speeds, improving yielding behaviour at intersections, and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians,” a City of Regina release stated.
As of Aug. 24 crews began removing existing speed humps on Whelan Drive and on Aug. 25 crews installed new TC curbs at two crosswalks.
The curbs are used to guide drivers away from sidewalks and are the same height as regular sidewalk curbs and allow for water to flow under them eliminating drainage concerns.
TC curbs cost less than traditional speed bumps and have been implemented in many Alberta and Ontario municipalities, the release stated.
The City of Regina will review further potential locations to install TC curbs in the future, the release said.
