EDMONTON – Construction on the Gateway Boulevard Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project began on Aug. 18 in stages starting with the rehabilitation of University Avenue to 80th Avenue.
The scope of work includes removal and excavation of the existing sidewalk and road, new curb, gutter and sidewalk installation, reconstruction of the road including base asphalt, surface paving and landscaping and improved street lighting and traffic signals.
Two lanes of traffic will remain open on Gateway Boulevard and pedestrians will need to detour where required.
Gateway Boulevard enters the city at Highway 2 from the south corporate limit. It is the main entrance and corridor into the heart of Edmonton, including Old Strathcona, the river valley and downtown. Between University Avenue and 80th Avenue, Gateway Boulevard is a four-lane roadway that transitions into a three-lane roadway north of 80th Avenue.
Between 81 and 82nd Avenue (Whyte Avenue), the roadway accommodates three lanes of traffic with a right turn lane and on street parking on the west side.
Phase two begins in 2023 with reconstruction work on 80th Avenue to Whyte (82nd) Avenue.
