VANCOUVER — Two schools in Vancouver have reopened after one received upgrades and another was entirely rebuilt for seismic safety.
Wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm, formerly Sir Matthew Begbie Elementary, was rebuilt with a $22.4-million investment from the Government of British Columbia, states a news release.
The school was built using mass timber and includes a neighbourhood learning centre.
Dr. George M. Weir Elementary received seismic upgrades and a partial replacement.
More than $16 million went towards replacing the gymnasium, library and several classrooms. The remaining classrooms received upgrades.
“It is a top priority of the Vancouver School District to ensure all students attend seismically safe schools as quickly as possible,” said Victoria Jung, chair of the Vancouver School Board, in the release.
