PCL CONSTRUCTORS CANADA INC. — The YYC Calgary International Airport Trail Tunnel has been immortalized in HBO’s hit new drama ‘The Last of Us.’ The tunnel was built by PCL Constructors Canada Inc. in 2012. The entire season of ‘The Last of Us’ was shot in Alberta.

CALGARY — And the Emmy award for best Canadian set piece goes too…

Fans of HBO’s hit new drama “The Last of Us” may not know the show has a very visual Canadian connection.

The YYC Calgary International Airport Trail Tunnel is featured in the first season of the show. The tunnel was completed by PCL Constructors Canada Inc. back in 2012.

“Through the first season of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us,’ we’ve been thinking this tunnel looked familiar,” wrote PCL in an Instagram post.

“It’s nice to know it’s still holding strong in a post-apocalyptic world.”

In fact, the entire season of The Last of Us was shot in Alberta and is considered one of the largest productions to ever take place in the country.

The construction schedule for the tunnel would make for a fairly exciting episode of television itself.

Designs for the tunnel began in April 2011 and construction was completed by October 2012.

“This aggressive schedule arose from the need to complete the tunnel and backfill it without affecting the overall schedule for runway development,” writes PCL on its website.

But the tunnel was completed on schedule and will far outlive its construction lifespan thanks to being enshrined in television by “The Last of Us.”
