Project to clean up Lake Winnipeg receives $8 million

WINNIPEG — The Government of Manitoba is investing $8 million to help the City of Winnipeg improve the cleanliness of Lake Winnipeg.

The funds will go towards wastewater infrastructure. Approximately $7.5 million has been allotted to the southwest sewer interceptor project and $433,000 for risk mitigation infrastructure at the Darcy Sewer Lift station, a news release states.

“One of our government’s top priorities has been to clean up Lake Winnipeg and work with the (city) in a collaborative way to advance the much-needed upgrades to the North End Water Pollution Control Centre,” said Environment and Climate Minister Kevin Klein in a news release.

“These upgrades will provide immediate pollution relief to the Red River and Lake Winnipeg, and mitigate flood risks for many homes in Winnipeg and the surrounding area.”

Lake Winnipeg was declared the most polluted lake in Canada in 2013.

The project is part of a series of initiatives led by the city to improve wastewater and sewer infrastructure.
