VANCOUVER — Seismic upgrades are now complete at Edith Cavell Elementary in Vancouver.
The school was originally built in 1920 and was seismically upgraded using funds of $15.6 million from the Province of British Columbia.
“Making schools seismically safer throughout B.C. is a top priority for our government. We’ve made great progress seismically upgrading and replacing schools in Vancouver. There is still more to do and we are committed to continuing to work with the Vancouver School Board to ensure students have safe, modern learning environments,” said B.C. Minister of Education and Child Care Rachna Singh in a statement.
B.C. is also providing up to $29.2 million to fund a seismic upgrade at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary involving capacity for 465 students with upgrades to all classrooms, the gymnasium, library and administrative offices, a release said.
During construction at Sir Wilfred Grenfell Elementary students will temporarily be accommodated at another site in the district. Design of the school will begin in fall 2023 with the project anticipated to be ready for students by fall 2026.
Since September 2017, approximately $360 million has been invested in the Vancouver School District to seismically upgrade or replace 13 schools in Vancouver, the release said.
