Feds, Nunavut invest more than $194 million in critical infrastructure

IQALUIT – The federal government and Government of Nunavut are jointly investing more than $194 million to build critical infrastructure.

Projects include a new water treatment facility in the Municipality of Sanikiluaq, a long-term care facility in Rankin Inlet and public transportation for the hamlets of Pond Inlet and Resolute Bay.

Work on the Sanikiluaq water treatment plant includes design and construction of a building that complies with public health standards. Other communities that will also see new water treatment facilities include the hamlets of Pond Inlet, Arctic Bay, and Grise Fiord.

Funding will also support the completion of a 24-bed seniors long-term care facility in Rankin Inlet, which will provide essential personal care and health services to Nunavummiut Elders. The new space will also operate with low greenhouse gas emissions.

Direct funding to municipalities will support the purchase of transit vehicles for the hamlets of Pond Inlet and Resolute Bay.

The federal government is investing $129.9 million towards the projects while the Government of Nunavut is investing $64.8 million. The hamlets of Pond Inlet and Resolute Bay are contributing a combined $76,755, a federal government release said.
