PC CAUCUS — The new Portage Regional Health Centre project in Portage La Prairie, Man. more than doubles the footprint of the current hospital.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MAN. — PCL Construction recently offered a site tour of its Portage Regional Health Centre project in Portage La Prairie, Man. to an appreciative local MLA.

“The first thing I noticed upon entering the site was the sheer size of it: this 260,000 square foot facility more than doubles the footprint of the current hospital,” said Jeff Bereza, MLA for Portage la Prairie.

The new facility will have 114 acute care patient beds, including medicine, surgical, rehabilitation, palliative care, maternity and special care. Other features include increased day surgery capacity, expanded emergency department and upgraded spaces for programs such as diagnostics, dialysis, palliative care and outpatient services including lab and rehabilitation.

The facility, due for substantial completion in November 2025, overlooks Crescent Lake. The health centre will also include a new Indigenous health services cultural space.

“To be a patient in a hospital means needing professional medical help, a situation no one wishes to be in,” said Bereza. “I’m pleased to know that this facility is being built with the comfort of patients, and the people who care for them, as a priority.”

Other improvements include modern mechanical and electrical systems and direct access from the helipad into the emergency department.
