CFBC highlights carpenter’s journey to Red Seal

CFBC highlights carpenter’s journey to Red Seal

CHILLIWACK, B.C. – The Construction Foundation of British Columbia (CFBC) is shining a spotlight on a Chilliwack carpenter’s work toward Red Seal certification.

Bruce Hoch accessed the services of the Coast Capital Road to Red Seal (RRS) program which supports tools to tradespeople that “identify individual learning styles and gaps and build on participant strengths,” a CFBC release said.

Hoch was initially introduced to RRS through its program manager, Michelle Anderlini. The two discussed and determined the barriers and challenges that were preventing him from achieving certification, the release said.

“I have a hard time remembering stuff and the exams really make it difficult with the way that they present the questions. I fall somewhere on the spectrum with autism and deal with learning disabilities…I tend to get hyper-focused,” Hoch said.

Hoch also worked with RRS learning catalyst Dave Lovisa to assist him with exam preparation.

“It was important having a person I felt comfortable with. Having someone that could read to me and help me better understand and explain the questions — in the past I would get confused,” Hoch said.

Hoch successfully completed the exam and now has a Red Seal certification. He said he’s committed to expanding on his work and continuing to overcome communication barriers to train and teach his carpenter apprentices.

“I couldn’t do it without the Red Seal certification. Now I have it and I can keep building my crew,” he said.
