A construction worker escaped serious injury when a crane came into contact with a power line at a site on West Broadway in Vancouver, B.C. late last week.

“The workers were stripping the forms for a commercial high-rise construction project with the assistance of a tower crane, when the load line for the crane contacted a power line,” said WorkSafeBC spokesperson Megan Johnston.

“There was a worker on the ground or at the level of the form, who was in contact with the form, when the load line was electrified.”

The incident happened at about 9 a.m. on July 18.

The prime contractor on the project is Syncra Construction, but the two workers involved in the incident were employed by a formwork subcontractor called Carion Construction.

According to Johnston, the worker on the ground was alert and walking around following contact with the live power line, but he was taken to hospital for further observation.

“The second worker was in the crane and uninjured, but was required to stay within the cab of the crane until it was determined that it was safe to leave,” said Johnston, who added that BC Hydro has approved the relocation of the crane to a new spot on the site.

In addition, WorkSafeBC requires the crane to be re-certified before it goes back into operation.

The incident is under investigation by WorkSafeBC.

BC Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer said the incident caused a two hour power outage that affected about 1,800 customers.
