Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) is investigating the death of a young man, who was killed late last year while repairing a tire on a piece of heavy equipment near Fort McMurray.

“A 22-year old male worker was called to repair a tire on a piece of heavy equipment,” said Brookes Merritt, a spokesperson for Alberta OH&S.

“During the repair process, the tire came off the rim and a ring from the tire assembly struck the worker causing fatal injuries.”

Merritt said the incident happened at about 4 p.m. on Dec 28 about 26 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

The worker was an employee at Kal Tire and the prime contractor was Sun Trucking.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the individual’s family and loved ones in this time of sorrow and grief,” said Robert Foord, president of Kal Tire.

“We will make every effort possible to support them through this tragedy.”

Members of Kal Tire’s senior management team were in Fort McMurray to assist all other team members through this difficult time, including grief counselling.

A stop work order was issued and OH&S officers are investigating the incident. In the interim, a stop-work order has been issued in the Fort McMurray area for certain types of service calls. Kal Tire is also conducting its own investigation of the incident.
