RICHMOND, B.C. – WorkSafeBC has released a new three-year plan to help employers reduce serious injuries in the construction sector.
Titled the 2018-2020 Construction High Risk Strategy, the plan focuses on health and safety responsibilities, tools, equipment and processes, and partnership and collaboration.
WorkSafeBC officers will conduct workplace inspections focused on health and safety planning and supervision. They will also engage with contractors, owners, employers and workers to promote effective supervision and planning practices.
The organization plans to focus on proper tool and equipment use and processes to reduce workplace injuries and will work with internal and external stakeholders such as the BC Construction Safety Alliance to encourage communication on mitigating safety risks.
“The serious injury rate in the construction sector is much higher than in most other sectors. Our goal with the high-risk strategies is simple — to reduce the number of serious injuries,” said Dan Strand, WorkSafeBC director of prevention field services, in a statement.
The serious injury rate in the construction sector in 2016 was 0.8 per 100 person-years of employment, compared to an average of 0.3 per cent across all sectors in B.C.
Falls from height were the leading cause of injury for B.C. construction workers and the leading cause of death remains asbestos exposure.
