A worker has died after an incident at a south Burnaby construction site.
According to media reports, the worker was laying sewer and drainage pipe in a trench in the area of 7100-block of 14th Avenue the morning of July 14 when the bucket of an excavator fell on top of him. A spokesperson for developer Ledingham McCallister told reporters the release occurred due to mechanical failure.
WorkSafeBC media relations manager Ivy Yuen confirmed to the Journal of Commerce that WorkSafeBC was notified on July 14 about a serious incident at a construction site in Burnaby and sent a prevention officer. WorkSafeBC’s OHS Investigation Services team also responded, Yuen said.
The site is operated by Marcon Construction.
“We are saddened by the tragedy related to our construction site in Burnaby and our primary concern is for this worker’s family. We have offered our support to our trade partner for whom he worked. We will also be offering support to anyone who witnessed the accident,” Marcon Construction president Marco Paolella said in a statement.
“We, along with our trade partner, are providing WorkSafeBC inspectors with any information they need to conduct a full investigation. We voluntarily shut down all work today (July 14).”
Paolella said while Marcon awaits more information from WorkSafeBC, it can share that one of its trade partners was excavating near the construction site to run pipes under a civic road.
“This company has its own safety protocols and procedures that govern their work, therefore we cannot speak on their behalf about their safety oversight,” he added.
“We offer our sincerest condolences to the worker’s family.”
