20 workers confirmed COVID-19 positive at Keeyask site in Manitoba

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Hydro has confirmed 20 workers have tested positive for COVID-19.

Another 11 workers with an initial “not clear” are awaiting results of a second test from Cadham Provincial Lab, a Manitoba Hydro release said.

“We are acting quickly in accordance with the COVID-19 response plan developed for the Keeyask Project and adapting that response as needed – as we all are across Manitoba – to stop the spread of this virus. This includes continuing our daily communication with our partners to ensure they have the latest, up-to-date information,” Manitoba Hydro president and CEO Jay Grewal said in the statement.

Steps taken since the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed at Keeyask on Oct. 25 included testing all workers onsite, initiating a temporary workforce reduction, removing table seating in the dining hall and requiring workers to eat in their rooms, and closure of the camp’s gym, movie theatre and lounge, the release said.

Site staff are also working with public health officials to enforce masking requirements and inspect transportation to and from the worksite to ensure physical distancing measures are followed, the release added.

“Manitoba Hydro had already implemented the requirements of a code red designation where applicable prior to this declaration and we continue to work closely with public health authorities and our Keeyask Cree Nation partners to co-ordinate our response to these COVID cases, providing frequent and timely updates on the situation,” Grewal said.
