VANCOUVER – The family of a construction worker killed by a falling crane load has started a fundraiser to send her body home.
On Feb 21. construction worker Yuridia Flores was killed after a crane’s load fell at a construction site located on Oakridge and 41st in Vancouver. Flores husband, Diego Aguilar Flores has started a GoFundMe to send her to her birth city of Acapulco Guerroro in Mexico. Yuridia Flores was a permanent resident of Canada.
“My family and I are very devastated, she was a mother of two, leaving behind a 16t year’s old son. Yuridia Flores was a lovely daughter, sister, mother, and wife,” Flores said on the fundraising page.
As of Feb. 24, $52,627 has been raised from 734 donations, over the $30,000 goal.
Canadian Association of Women in Construction (CAWIC) president Lisa Laronde gave her condolences to the family in a statement sent to the Journal of Commerce.
“On behalf of CAWIC we are saddened to hear of the passing of the worker on the construction site in British Columbia yesterday. While we can’t speak about this worker individually, our hearts go to her family, friends, and fellow construction workers impacted by this tragedy. This incident is a sad reminder of the importance of ensuring that all construction workers remain safe on their job sites and are able to make it home each and every day,” Laronde said.
The load fell from the crane on Wednesday afternoon on Feb. 21 and struck the building about 25 storeys up. Matthew Trudeau with Vancouver Fire Rescue Services confirmed the fatality hours after the incident occurred.
Dustin Luchka, a spokesman for the construction company EllisDon Corp., said operations at the site had been halted on Thursday.
