$35-million Winnipeg Hilton hotel project begins

WINNIPEG – During an official groundbreaking ceremony on June 14, Winnipeg’s SK Developments Inc. was joined by government representatives, partners and Hilton Worldwide executives to announce the official name and details of the four-star Hilton Garden Inn Winnipeg South hotel to be developed on the SEASONS site.

The $35-million property will be the first Hilton Garden Inn in Manitoba and is being developed by local hotel developer-operator SK Developments, which will also manage the property once complete in late summer 2017.

The 86,565 square foot hotel will include a 3,740 square foot beer vendor, indoor pool, a full-service restaurant, bar and patios and 2,500 square feet of meeting space to serve groups and businesses in the Winnipeg South area. The 127-room, six-storey property will be located off Sterling Lyon Parkway in Winnipeg’s first large scale mixed-use development.

"SK Developments is thrilled to partner with Hilton Worldwide to bring the first Hilton Garden Inn to Winnipeg and Manitoba, where it will be the only hotel in the area," said Moni Kaila, vice-president of SK Developments in a statement.

"The Hilton Garden Inn Winnipeg South will provide tourists, business travellers and shoppers with all the amenities they need, whether they’re visiting the hotel and area for business or pleasure."

SK Developments estimates the project will create up to 150 jobs.

"Manitoba’s many unique attractions welcome visitors from all over the world," said MLA Kelly Bindle, legislative assistant to Manitoba’s minister of growth, enterprise and trade. "Manitoba’s new government welcomes the significant investment in this project by SK Developments, their partners and Hilton Worldwide. These kind of partnerships create jobs, attract tourism dollars, and contribute to a stronger Manitoba economy."

To help mark the cycle from groundbreaking to grand opening at the event, plants from Winnipeg’s Lacoste Garden Centre were distributed to guests. In 2017, guests will be invited to bring the perennials back to the grand opening event for landscapers to add to the hotel grounds.

The hotel is being constructed by Thomas Design Builders Ltd. and will consist of Manitoba materials that will complement the SEASONS site. The building facade will be enhanced with a mix of red brick masonry and Manitoba Tyndall stone accents.

The hotel’s entryway will have a drive-through canopy and dedicated drop-off area for guests.

Exterior patios will be linked to the restaurant, articulating the open-plan main floor pedestrian level where guests will enjoy flow between interior and exterior spaces.

SEASONS is designed to be Winnipeg’s first large scale mixed-use development featuring a Hilton Garden Inn, grocery store, drugstore, medical office, restaurants, luxury auto dealerships, gas station, bank, housing options and the Outlet Collection Winnipeg — Manitoba’s only fashion outlet mall. The combined site represents over 100 acres and nearly one million square feet of mixed-use retail space.
