FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — BC Hydro recently announced it has awarded three major Site C project contracts, including one for the generating station and spillways civil works.
AFDE Partnership, comprised of Aecon, Flatiron, Dragados and EBC, have received the $1.6-billion contract for the generating station and spillways work, which is the second largest contract on the project and includes delivery of the powerhouse, penstocks, spillways and power intakes. The overall revised budget of the project is $10.7 billion.
Construction will include placement of approximately 700,000 cubic metres of mass and reinforced concrete, the installation of 34,000 tonnes of rebar and two 17-storey-high spillways.
The AFDE partnership has signed a labour agreement which has a goal of up to 25 per cent apprenticeships on the project and includes unions from the BC Building Trades. The agreement also prioritizes hiring local and Indigenous workers.
Work on the contract will start onsite in spring 2018 and will be completed over a five-year period. An estimated 1,600 people will be working on the generating station and spillways civil works at peak construction in 2021, states a release.
A $33-million contract was also awarded to Nanaimo-based F&M Installations to build the Site C substation, and REEL COH Inc. was awarded a $23-million contract to design, supply and commission the generating station and spillways powerhouse bridge and gantry cranes.
