Saskatchewan approves park pool replacement

Saskatchewan approves park pool replacement
Province of Saskatchewan - A rendering shows what a replacement pool facility will look like in Saskatchewan’s Buffalo Pound Provincial Park.

MOOSE JAW, SASK. – Visitors to Buffalo Pound Provincial Park in Saskatchewan will soon be able to take a dip. The province recently announced it will be building a new pool at the park.

“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that the swimming pool at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is a key attraction for visitors,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said in a press release.  “We are pleased to announce that a new swimming pool will open to the public during the summer of 2020.”

Crews have already completed demolishing the previous pool facility. The final drawings for the new pool are expected to be completed in April.  The province expects to have a construction contract for the project finalized by June with construction starting shortly after. The park’s original pool opened in 1972 and was a major draw for visitors. This made it a priority project to replace. The province estimates the project will cost approximately $2.5 million.

The province stated that the design of the pool will meet the needs of a wide range of users.  The facility will feature universal design principles and will include a sloped accessible entry for young children or anyone with mobility concerns. The design will include two buildings – a changing area and a building containing mechanical systems and admission services.

The project team expects to repurpose some of the old facility’s amenities to save costs.
