WIKIMEDIA COMMONS - The province of Manitoba is putting $11 million towards revitalizing the historic Dauphin Courthouse in Dauphin, Man.

DAUPHIN, MAN. – One of Manitoba’s historic courthouses is getting a $11-million makeover.

The century-old Dauphin courthouse in Dauphin, Man is about to undergo a major renovation as part of a province-wide effort to modernize and revitalize the province’s courts.

“Our government is committed to enhancing Manitoba’s justice system and to help keep Manitobans safe in their homes and communities,” said provincial justice minister Cliff Cullen.  “Providing accessible, efficient justice services to those living in Dauphin and surrounding communities is a priority, and these investments will support further modernization of Manitoba’s courts.”

The courthouse will be expanded to enhance security, including the addition of a holding cell. Accessibility for the building’s interior, exterior and washroom facilities will be improved and improved meeting and video-conferencing spaces for lawyers and their clients are planned. New administrative and office space is also planned for court staff, sheriff services and the judiciary.

The design of the courthouse will be finalized in coming months and disruption will be kept to a minimum, Cullen said.

The adjacent Dauphin Correctional Centre was built in 1917 and has reached the end of serviceability. Operations at the facility are expected to wind down by May, Cullen said.

Those held in custody at Dauphin will be held at six other adult correctional facilities throughout the province, a Manitoba government release stated.
