Victoria wraps up $13-million road improvement project

VICTORIA — After more than 16 months of work, crews have wrapped up the $13-million Victoria Street West improvement project in Victoria, B.C.

Construction started April 15, 2019, at the east end of the corridor near 1st Avenue and moved west to the Overlanders Bridge. The project included replacing and undergrounding utilities, reconstructing the road, and improving pedestrian access, lighting, and landscaping.

City officials explained the area’s aging infrastructure, including water, sanitary and storm services dated back to the early 1900s and were in dire need of replacement. Beautification, enhancements to the roadway and increased pedestrian safety were also top priorities for the project.

“Both the city and Extreme Excavating worked very hard to finish this project significantly ahead of schedule. We recognize the impact this project had on businesses and residents within the project limits, as well as the community members who travel through this main corridor. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s support throughout this project,” said Jen Fretz, the city’s civic operations director, in a statement.
