Alberta’s Kinplex Arena gets lighting upgrade
CITY OF MEDICINE HAT — Kinplex Arena in Medicine Hat, Alta. will produce less greenhouse gases and be better lit thanks to recent lighting improvements.

MEDICINE HAT, ALTA. — Crews have wrapped up installing new light fixtures in Medicine Hat’s Kinplex Arena.

As part of a green energy initiative, crews installed 136 new LED lighting high and low bay fixtures, as well as LED strip fixtures. City officials noted the new lights will significantly increase the facility’s visibility.

“With the flick of a switch, players and staff will instantly see a difference stepping out onto the ice,” said Stephane Rainville, superintendent of recreation facilities, in a statement. “Even family and friends in the stands will notice how much brighter the rink is.”

The changes were recommended in a recent lighting assessment report that looked for ways to save on costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

A grant program available through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre funded approximately $92,000 towards the total cost of the project. The city contributed the remaining funding necessary.
These improvements are expected to save up to $9,900 annually in electricity costs and reduce GHG emissions by up to 90 tonnes.
