Large-scale mixed-use development planned for west Winnipeg

West Winnipeg is about to become home to a major mixed-use development which would be the largest such development that the area has ever seen.

The 100,000-square-foot project, located just west of the Perimeter Highway that surrounds and defines Winnipeg, is being orchestrated by Shindico, one of Western Canada’s largest developers.

The complex, reports Shindico’s president Sandy Shindleman, will include a five or six-storey hotel, a free-standing restaurant on the site, retail shopping centre and strip malls with retail stores, a supermarket and other restaurant options and two highrise residential rental units.

“We have been working on getting the zoning for this for more than 10 years,” Shindleman reports.  “This is a logical extension of west Portage Avenue. One of Winnipeg’s two main traffic arteries, Portage morphs into the TransCanada Highway at Headingly.”

Shindleman notes what makes the location for this project particularly attractive is not only its close proximity to Winnipeg but also its location just south of the Red River Exhibition grounds and Assiniboia Downs racetrack. It is also just west of a relatively new ice-plex and the Pointe West AutoPark with its 10 dealerships.

Shindleman reports the servicing for the location has been completed and roadwork is underway.

“We will have different contractors for different aspects of the project,” he says. “We are making good headway in lining up the retail tenants and hope to begin construction next summer.”

He adds that the site has up to one million square feet for potential expansion.
