Vancouver-based team sticks landing on Victoria skate park contract

VICTORIA, B.C. — The City of Victoria has selected a B.C.-based team to design and build a $3 million skate and bike park.

The new facility, which will be located in Topaz Park, will be designed and built by New Line Skateparks, van der Zalm + associates and Alpine Bike Parks.

“To attract a team of this calibre is pretty exciting and speaks to the passion in our community for skateboarding and cycling,” said Mayor Lisa Helps in a press release. “We heard a lot of community support for a skate and bike park during the development of the 10-year Topaz Park Improvement Plan, and now we’re making it a reality.”

The New Line team is internationally renowned for work on municipal park facilities. Together, the team has completed more than 300 projects across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia over the last 20 years.

The core team is comprised of landscape architects, engineers, arborists, community outreach specialists and construction professionals who also have experience as high-level skateboarders and BMX/mountain biking  athletes.

The project team also features gender equity, accessibility and youth programming experts the ensure the final result meets local needs.

The city is now looking to hire a professional artist or artist team to work with the design team to create a dynamic public artwork piece to be integrated into the new skateboard park.

The project was approved by the city early last year as part of the long-term renewal plan for Topaz park. The 3,000 square metre skate park and 6,000 square metre bike park is expected to feature obstacles for all skill levels. The final designs will be developed with input from community stakeholders. Construction is expected to be completed next summer.
