Possible site found for Burnaby fire station
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY—The City of Burnaby and Simon Fraser University have identified a preferred site for a new fire station near the school's campus.

BURNABY, B.C.—A preferred site has been identified for a new fire station in Burnaby.

The City of Burnaby and Simon Fraser University (SFU) announced they have found a preferred Burnaby Mountain site for Fire Station #8. Officials stated they are also working on the necessary feasibility study and design work to get shovels in the ground before 2024.

The site is located at the northeast corner of Tower Road and University Drive on the east side of the mountain. The city is now working with SFU on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Officials stated the new fire station on Burnaby Mountain will ensure emergencies in the area can be responded to promptly.

“The community on Burnaby Mountain has been rapidly growing and we’re enhancing our emergency capacity to respond to that growth,” said Mayor Mike Hurley in a statement. “People live, work, study and play on Burnaby Mountain, and it is essential that we have the capacity and infrastructure to keep up with the changing emergency management needs of the community.”

The city intends to plan, design and build the facility in co-ordination with the school, which will provide the site.

“A new fire station on Burnaby Mountain is crucial to maintaining a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff, and surrounding community,” said Joy Johnson, SFU president and vice-chancellor. “We’re very pleased to see this project moving forward and are confident that, once completed, the new station will help keep the SFU and Burnaby communities well protected for years to come.”

In July, the federal government announced a commitment of $30 million towards the project through Pacific Economic Development Canada.
