MAYNE ISLAND, B.C. — The first standalone childcare centre on Mayne Island has opened its doors for the community.
The new facility, called the Family Space, was completed with the help of $1.3 million from the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund, according to a news release.
At 2,600 square feet the centre can accommodate 36 children and is located next to the Mayne Island Community Centre.
Through the ChildCareBC fund the province and Government of Canada are investing roughly $300 million into the creation of new licensed child care spaces in high-need areas.
After the community outgrew the existing temporary child care space available, a group of volunteers formed the Mayne Island Early Childhood Society and partnered with the community centre to achieve the funding, states the release.
“I am thrilled to celebrate the opening of the Family Place and congratulate the grassroots volunteer committee of working moms who worked with the community to make this fabulous childcare centre a reality,” said Minister of State for Child Care Grace Lore in the release.
