VANCOUVER — Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside just added 60 new supportive homes to help people experiencing homelessness.
The transitional, fixed-term spaces with 24/7 supports are located at 1525 ad 1535 Western St. Twenty-nine more spaces are set to open in the next few weeks at 2142 Ash St.
Lu’ma Native Housing Society will operate the housing on Western Street while PHS Community Services Society manages Dovetail Annex on Ash Street, according to a news release.
The housing was developed as part of the Government of British Columbia’s $19 billion housing investment. The Western Street housing will receive $2.4 million in annual operating funding and the Dovetail Annex will receive $1.7 million.
The temporary homes are being offered to people living in shelters and encampments at CRAB Park and Hastings Street.
“We are pleased to deliver Indigenous-centred, culturally informed community supports along with enhanced onsite health supports benefiting those we serve in secure permanent housing,” said Kevin Eaton, executive director of supportive housing with Lu’ma, in the release.
