HAIDA GWAII – In a recent move to address housing needs in Haida Gwaii, the Province of British Columbia, through BC Housing, has acquired a building to provide 12 homes for First Nation Elders, seniors, and workers from the Old Massett and Masset villages.
According to a recent press release, this initiative is in response to the urgent housing crisis, offering critical off-reserve housing options in the area.
The two-storey building, located at 1545 Wallace St. in Massett, will be owned and operated by the Old Massett Village Council. It includes six one-bedroom and six two-bedroom units, designed to cater to the needs of the local communities on the northern shore of Graham Island in Haida Gwaii.
The building, requiring renovations for various components that have reached their service life’s end, will have eight of its 12 units operated as near-market rental housing targeted at
middle-income households. The remaining four units are designated for low-income families, with rents set at 30 per cent of the household’s income.
With a $4 million budget for purchasing and renovating the building, residents are expected to start moving into their new homes by late 2024.
