Calgary announces Winter City winners

CALGARY, ALTA. – The City of Calgary, in partnership with Chinook Blast, have announced the winners of the 2024 Winter City Design Competition.

For the past three years the Calgary design community has shown experimental outdoor spaces that “re-imagine a winter experience that entices people to head out, linger and explore the heart of our city,” a release said.

1000 Faces by artist Alejandro Figueroa, located at Eau Claire promenade near 6 Street SW, is an installation suspended on a 40-foot-high arch with 1,779 plexiglass tiles moving independently to mirror natural rhythms.

(p)arc, designed by Jonathan Monfries and Madisen Killingsworth, acts as a gateway to Olympic Plaza with a focus on sustainability, minimizing landfill material, and supporting inclusive artistic programming, the release said. Both projects took top honours.

“We are so excited about the 2024 winning teams and to partner with Chinook Blast. 1000 faces and (p)arc are two amazing examples of creative and immersive designs that will definitely have people talking,” Winter City project lead Kate Zago said.

Chinook Blast chair and Calgary Arts Development president and CEO Patti Pon added, “Chinook Blast is excited to celebrate the 2024 Winter City Design Competition winners with the City of Calgary. These exhibits embody the spirit of Chinook Blast, transforming winter into a season of excitement and exploration.”
