Alberta plans $103 million for Calgary’s downtown arts district
MAJORPROJECTS.ALBERTA.CA — The Arts Commons project in Alberta supports six resident arts companies and once finished will be one of the largest contiguous indoor and outdoor arts-focused spaces in Canada.

CALGARY, ALTA. – The Alberta government’s 2024 budget will, if passed, put $103 million over seven years towards supporting the Arts Commons and Olympic Plaza transformation project.

The Arts Commons supports six resident arts companies and once finished will be one of the largest contiguous indoor and outdoor arts-focused spaces in Canada, a release said.

“Calgary’s Arts Commons is an undisputed part of Calgary’s identity and we want to ensure the show continues to go on – bigger and better than ever,” Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said in a statement.

The project will enable the centre to have more space for educational, cultural and artistic programming, performances, meetings and conferences for youth and the broader public, the release said.

The Arts Commons transformation will proceed in two phases, with the first phase expected to cost $240 million and include construction of The Road House with multiple venues, theatres and space for 200-plus community groups to use the space, according to the Alberta Major Projects site. The second phase is expected to cost $204 million and will revitalize the existing 560,000 square foot Arts Commons Facility.

The developer is Calgary Municipal Land Corp. and the contractor is EllisDon.
