EDMONTON – The City of Edmonton has completed a solar installation on the Commonwealth Recreation Centre near the downtown core.
The installation is currently in operation with 1,128 panels that cover an area of 40,760 square feet.
The 550W panels, anticipated to produce 708 MWh of energy in the first year of operation, are the equivalent to powering 100 residential homes for one year, a City of Edmonton release said.
The installation can offset between 75 and 100 per cent of the facility’s energy needs in ideal solar conditions on a day with average building consumption, the release added.
The Commonwealth Recreation Centre Solar Photovoltaics Installation project received $340,000 in funding from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the Government of Alberta.
As of March, 12 city-owned facilities have solar photovoltaic installations in operation, the release said.
