PITT MEADOWS, B.C. – Metro Vancouver will begin construction in the fall on a new non-market rental housing project in Pitt Meadows, B.C., including a non-profit child care facility.
The project, called Heron’s Nest, will provide 115 homes for families and individuals with the child care centre holding spaces for 150 children.
A Metro Vancouver release said the project began when the City of Pitt Meadows approached the regional district with a proposal to lease a city-owned lot in the downtown area at a nominal rate.
“We are grateful for the significant investment from Metro Vancouver and provincial partners, and the city is proud to provide the centrally located land for the development. This project will strengthen our community by helping seniors, people with disabilities, and families facing housing challenges access safe, below-market housing and quality child care,” Pitt Meadows Mayor Nicole MacDonald said in a statement.
In April 2023 the provincial government signed a memorandum of understanding through BC Housing with the Metro Vancouver Housing arm which plans for approximately 2,000 below-market homes over the next 10 years.
The first phase is underway, the release said, and will provide approximately 660 new homes on five sites including Heron’s Nest supported with a provincial investment of $158 million.
