LNG Canada approves $937 million in contracts
LNGCANADA.CA — LNG Canada announced it has approved over $937 million in contracts and subcontracts as of December 2018 for its liquefied natural gas facility in Kitimat, B.C.

VANCOUVER — LNG Canada recently announced it has approved over $937 million in contracts and subcontracts with First Nations and other businesses across Canada as of December 2018.

Approximately $175 million went to local First Nation businesses, and with the addition of contracts to local Kitimat-area businesses, including those owned by First Nations, the total rose to $330 million. Nearly $400 million was awarded to contractors and subcontractors across Canada.

A final investment decision was made in October 2018 to proceed with an LNG export facility in Kitimat, B.C.

The decision was made by Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and KOGAS, the joint venture partnership making up LNG Canada.

“What these contracts and subcontracts represent, is tremendous opportunity for individuals to find employment on the LNG Canada project through our contractors and subcontractors.

For First Nations communities, it is delivering on the opportunities we have committed to that will assist the Nations, address issues of poverty, unemployment and skills development. For local communities, it is the opportunity for young people to find employment that allows them to remain living in the North,” LNG Canada director of external relations Susannah Pierce said in a statement.

About 249 workers were hired by LNG Canada or its contractors in October 2018, the first month of the construction phase of the project, a release from LNG Canada stated.

LNG Canada and Coastal GasLink, the pipeline project that will transport natural gas from northeastern B.C. to the LNG export facility, estimate 10,000 Canadian workers will be needed for the contract. Coastal GasLink announced earlier it had awarded $620 million in contracts to First Nations with an additional $400 million to be awarded during the remainder of construction.
