VANCOUVER — Vancouver’s River District community will soon have space and water heating energy provided by Metro Vancouver’s waste-to-energy facility.

A new agreement with Metro Vancouver will have River District Energy buying up to 10 megawatts of heat from the waste-to-energy facility beginning in 2025, resulting in less use of natural gas and a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

River District is the first development to use waste-to-energy heat recovery at the Metro Vancouver facility located in Burnaby. Using waste heat will allow River District to meet City of Vancouver Zero Emission Building policies and will provide heat and hot water for 18,000 residents and more than 500,000 square feet of office and commercial space with a 90 per cent reduction in GHG emissions.

“The City of Burnaby is excited to see this project advance and we look forward to capitalizing on this new infrastructure to expand district energy into Burnaby neighbourhoods in the near future. These are the kinds of innovative solutions we need as we forge a path to a carbon-neutral future,” Burnaby Mayor and Metro Vancouver director Mike Hurley said in a statement.

Detailed project design will begin in early 2022 with the first phase of Metro Vancouver construction involving building an energy facility next to the waste-to-energy facility along with a pipe system to deliver hot water to River District. Construction of a community energy centre in River District to distribute heat from Metro Vancouver to the community will begin in 2023. The estimated cost of the first phase of Metro Vancouver’s district energy system is $55 million.
