Saskatchewan awards first recipient of Impacted Sites Fund

REGINA — The Town of Shaunavon has become Saskatchewan’s first recipient of the Impacted Sites Fund.

Administered by the Ministry of Environment, Shaunavon will receive $36,800 to help clean a contaminated site in the municipality.

The site in question is an abandoned property acquired in tax arrears that is contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon from the previous occupancy, states a news release.

“We know that contaminated sites can pose a risk to the health of the environment as well as the health of the people of Saskatchewan,” said Environment Minister Dana Skoropad in the release.

The Fund was created to give financial support to municipalities with orphaned environmentally impacted sites. The program’s funding is derived from fines collected through infractions under the Environmental Management and Protection Act, 2010.
